OpenAI Acquires OpenClaw Creator Peter Steinberger in Bold Bet on AI Agents

Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw — the open-source AI agent that exploded in popularity over the past few months — is joining OpenAI to work on “bringing agents to everyone.” The announcement, made over the weekend via a blog post, marks OpenAI’s most aggressive move yet toward autonomous AI that doesn’t just converse, but acts.

OpenClaw will transition to an independent foundation, though OpenAI is already a sponsor and may influence its direction. Sam Altman confirmed the hire, stating Steinberger would drive the next generation of personal agents at OpenAI.

From “Playground Project” to the Hottest Acquisition in AI

OpenClaw began as “ClawdBot” — a nod to Anthropic’s Claude model many developers were using to power it — released on GitHub in November 2025. It quickly distinguished itself from previous autonomous AI attempts (most notably the AutoGPT moment of 2023) by combining tool access, sandboxed code execution, persistent memory, skills, and easy integration with messaging platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and Discord.

The project saw explosive “hockey stick” adoption through December 2025 and into early 2026, particularly among AI “vibe coders” and developers impressed with its ability to complete tasks autonomously across applications.

Anthropic’s Missed Opportunity

The acquisition raises uncomfortable questions for Anthropic. OpenClaw was originally built to run on Claude and carried a name nodding to the model. Rather than embrace the community building on its platform, Anthropic reportedly sent Steinberger a cease-and-desist. Anthropic declined to comment.

Steinberger framed his move in characteristically understated terms: the project could have become “a huge company,” but his next mission is to “build an agent that even my mum can use” — a goal he believes requires access to frontier models only a major lab can provide.
