OpenClaw April 2026 Update Brings Unified Runtime and Breaking Changes

OpenClaw has shipped a significant April 2026 update that consolidates three major release series since the February documentation freeze, culminating in a unified execution model and breaking changes that every operator needs to know about.

The core change is the elimination of the legacy nodes.run architecture in favor of a unified execution model — a move that simplifies how agents handle concurrent tasks and long-running workflows. OpenAI compatibility has also been improved with automatic schema transpilation for function calling, resolving issues when integrating GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models.

Other highlights include:

  • ClawHub plugin verification is now mandatory, requiring bundled plugins to be verified before use
  • BrowserChrome MCP stability fixes allow agents to maintain browser sessions exceeding 24 hours without memory leaks
  • Claude Opus 4.7 defaults and Gemini TTS are now baked into the bundled Google plugin
  • Cloud-backed LanceDB memory lets durable memory indexes run on remote object storage instead of local disk only
  • GitHub Copilot embeddings are now supported for memory search, giving plugins a dedicated embedding transport

The update also introduces a localModelLean flag for weaker local-model setups, dropping heavyweight defaults like browser, cron, and message tools to reduce prompt size.
