OpenClaw crossed 368,000 GitHub stars and 12 million downloads in May 2026, cementing its position as the leading open-source AI agent framework. The milestone coincides with a pivotal moment for the project: it’s no longer just a scrappy open-source experiment — it’s a target.

Key enterprise signals in May 2026:

  • NVIDIA NemoClaw alpha shipped: A hardened OpenClaw fork integrated with NeMo guardrails and OpenShell sandboxes, giving risk-averse organizations a defensible architecture review option.
  • Tencent committed full-time maintainers: Major cloud provider resources now backing the project directly.
  • Claude Code HERMES.md surcharge controversy: Reports emerged that Claude Code was scanning repositories for OpenClaw’s HERMES.md agent configuration file and either refusing requests or routing them to 50x higher billing tiers — a sign that OpenClaw agents are large enough to provoke hosted-AI vendor policy responses.
