OpenClaw Hits 347K GitHub Stars as China Adoption Surges
OpenClaw’s adoption in China has become one of the more notable open-source AI stories of 2026. Multiple installation guides with hundreds of engagements spread across Chinese social media in March, and Tencent’s cloud division hosted a free installation event at its Shenzhen headquarters that drew queues of around 1,000 people.
The surge in interest coincided with China’s broader embrace of open-source AI as a developer-relations strategy. Major Chinese cloud providers and local governments have been supporting OpenClaw deployments, and paid installation services have since emerged on Chinese social platforms alongside meetups in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou.
OpenClaw reportedly crossed 347K GitHub stars during this period, with the April 2026 release adding security hardening and Claude Opus 4.7 integration. The growth has been cited as a case study in how grassroots developer enthusiasm can outpace formal marketing in the AI agent space.
