Setting It Up

1. Create a Finance Directory

2. Set Up a Cron Job

Create a daily or weekly cron job that runs an agent turn to:

  • Read new transactions from CSV
  • Categorize and summarize spending
  • Flag anomalies or subscription changes
  • Deliver a digest to Telegram

3. Automate Data Input

The weakest link in this workflow is getting transaction data in. Options:

  • Manual CSV export — download from your bank, drop in the folder
  • Email parsing — OpenClaw reads bank alert emails, extracts transaction info
  • API integration — if your bank offers an API, poll it on a schedule

A simple, reliable approach: set a calendar reminder to export your CSV once a week and drop it in the folder. OpenClaw handles the rest.

Subscription Audit

This is the use case that surprises people most. Most adults have 5–15 subscriptions — and at least 2–3 are ones they forgot about. OpenClaw can:

  • List all recurring charges from your transaction history
  • Flag charges that increased without notice
  • Alert when a free trial converts to paid
  • Track subscription totals per month vs. prior months

Anomaly Detection

“Wait — there’s a $400 charge from a vendor I’ve never used.” OpenClaw can flag transactions that don’t fit your normal spending patterns. Not fraud detection (use your bank’s actual fraud alerts for that), but pattern recognition:

  • Spending at unusual hours or locations

Limitations

Data freshness — this approach depends on CSV imports or API polling. The insights are only as good as the data. If you import weekly, you won’t catch issues until the weekly digest.

No write-back — OpenClaw reads and analyzes, but doesn’t pay bills or move money. That’s intentional — external financial actions warrant a human in the loop.

Categorization accuracy — LLMs handle novel transactions better than rigid rule engines, but occasionally miscategorize. The categories.json override file helps.

Multi-account complexity — tracking 3+ accounts across multiple banks adds bookkeeping overhead. Start with one account.

Why This Works

The personal finance problem isn’t a knowledge problem — most people know roughly what they should be doing. It’s an attention problem. You don’t need a better budget spreadsheet; you need something that reads the data you already have and puts a summary in front of you on a schedule you don’t have to remember.
