Set up cron jobs to run the review check at meaningful intervals:

60 days out — informational, for research:

Every 60 days, check all subscriptions and flag anything renewing in the next 60+ days. Send a Telegram message with the full list, costs, and prompts: "For each one, tell me if you've used it enough to justify renewal."

30 days out — action required:

Check all subscriptions with auto_renew: true and renewal_date within 30 days. For each one:
- State the cost and renewal date
- State the cancellation window
- Ask: "Keep, cancel, or downgrade?"
- If Keep: log that you've confirmed it
- If Cancel or Downgrade: provide step-by-step cancellation/change instructions

7 days out — final notice:

Starting Point: Your Credit Card Statement

Don’t try to remember everything off the top of your head. Pull the last six months of your credit card and bank statements, find every recurring charge, and build the registry from what actually shows up. You’ll often find subscriptions you’d completely forgotten about.

Limitations

It won’t cancel for you. OpenClaw gives you the information and the decision framework — it can’t click through a vendor’s cancellation flow. The actual cancellation or negotiation is still human work. This is an information system, not an agent with credit card portal access.

Registry accuracy depends on you. If you sign up for a new subscription and don’t add it to the registry, OpenClaw can’t alert you before it renews. Treat the registry as the authoritative source and keep it current.

Judgment call still required. OpenClaw can tell you what something costs and what alternatives exist — it can’t tell you whether the intangible value you get from a service is “worth it.” That evaluation is personal. OpenClaw just makes sure you’re making it consciously rather than by default.

Annual vs. monthly billing matters. This system works best for annual subscriptions where a single renewal decision once a year is manageable. Monthly subscriptions that require ongoing monthly cancellation decisions generate different dynamics — consider consolidating to annual billing where possible to create decision points with real leverage.

Setup Tips

  1. Start by finding every recurring charge — bank statements, iTunes purchase history, Google Pay. You’ll be surprised what you find.
  2. Set cancellation_window_days accurately — this is the critical field that gates when your alerts escalate to urgent.
  3. Mark your importance level — high/medium/low isn’t about cost, it’s about how much you’d care if you lost it. Your $5/month music service might be high importance.
  4. Add an alternatives field — every time you research a good alternative to something, write it in the notes. When the 30-day alert hits, the research is already done.
