You bought the mount, the scope, the cooled camera, the filter wheel. You’ve watched forty hours of YouTube tutorials on processing. You’ve downloaded Stellarium. And yet half your imaging sessions get cancelled because the moon came up at 1am and you didn’t realize it, or you set up on a “clear” night only to find out the seeing was 4 arc-seconds and your guiding graph looks like a seismograph.

Astrophotography is a logistics problem disguised as a hobby. The hard part isn’t pointing the telescope — it’s knowing when the conditions, the moon, the season, and your own energy will all line up. OpenClaw can solve that.

2. Set Up Two Cron Jobs

Go/No-Go brief at 8am daily. OpenClaw fetches:

  • Cloud cover and seeing forecast for tonight
  • Moon phase, illumination %, moonrise/set times
  • Astronomical twilight end (true astronomical dark)
  • A target list for objects currently well-placed at your latitude

It then sends a Telegram message:

Tonight’s outlook: Clear, 12% waxing moon sets at 22:14. Astronomical dark from 23:08 to 03:42 (4.5 hrs). Galactic core transits at 01:14, altitude 31°. Verdict: GOOD for narrowband or core imaging. Targets to consider: M8, M20, IC 1318. Backup: Bode’s Galaxy if transparency is poor.”

Pre-session gear check at 4pm. Reminds you to charge batteries, format SD cards, check the dew heater strap, top off the cooler, and load any updated flats library.

3. Maintain a Target Catalog and Session Log

After each session, dictate or text OpenClaw a few lines: “M81, 60 lights at 300s gain 100, -10C, L-Pro filter, transparency 7/10, guiding RMS 0.8”. It creates a dated session file with that data, computes total integration time, and updates the target’s master notes.

4. The Annual Cadence

Each month, OpenClaw surfaces what you haven’t imaged this year, what’s about to leave your imaging season, and what targets are coming up. After a year, you have:

  • Total integration time per object (the metric that matters)
  • A record of seeing conditions and which nights were wasted vs. productive

  • Forecast accuracy cliffs. The cloud-cover forecast for “tomorrow night” is decent. The seeing forecast is rough. The 5-day forecast is entertainment. OpenClaw is honest about confidence levels — it’ll mark low-confidence forecasts as such.
  • No plate-solving or image analysis. OpenClaw won’t tell you your stars are trailed or your flats are dirty. You still need to open the images.
  • Polar alignment drift and equipment quirks are out of scope. If your guide scope slipped, the agent won’t know. It logs what you tell it.
