You have a server in your closet. Maybe it’s a mini PC running Docker, a NAS doing double duty, or a full homelab with pfSense, TrueNAS, Plex, and Home Assistant. Getting these services running is the fun part. Keeping them running is the part nobody talks about.

Most self-hosting guides end at “here’s how you install it.” This post is about what happens at 2am when your Nginx reverse proxy crashes and your SSL certificates expire in three days and you don’t notice until you’re trying to access your Home Assistant remotely and it just… doesn’t work.

What Problem This Solves

The self-hosting maintenance problem has several layers:

  1. Monitoring — Is this actually working? (Not just “the container is running,” but “is it responding?”)
  2. Certificates — When does each SSL cert expire? Did certbot actually run?
  3. Backups — Did last night’s backup actually complete? Are the files valid?
  4. Remediation — Something broke. Can it be fixed automatically, or does a human need to intervene?

Commercial services handle the monitoring layer (UptimeRobot, Pingdom). Home Assistant’s built-in supervisor monitors its own ecosystem. But bridging across your entire homelab — multiple Docker Compose stacks, services on different machines, certificate management, backup verification — that’s a gap most people just live with.

OpenClaw fills it. Not because it’s purpose-built for this (nothing is), but because it has file access, exec access, scheduling, and messaging — and can reason about the state of your infrastructure the same way a good sysadmin would.

The Setup

You define your homelab once, in a structured config:

This takes 20-30 minutes to write the first time. After that, OpenClaw has a complete map of your infrastructure.

What OpenClaw Actually Does

Container Health Monitoring

It doesn’t just check if a container is running — it checks if it’s responding:

If a container is running but not responding, that’s the first sign of trouble — often a crash loop or resource exhaustion that a simple docker ps would miss.

SSL Certificate Expiration Tracking

Certificate monitoring is a specific pain point. You set up Nginx Proxy Manager or Caddy with auto-renewal and then… you forget about it. Until you can’t access your server remotely because the cert expired and your browser is blocking it.

OpenClaw reads your certificate files and alerts you before expiration:

Recommendation: Run certbot renew for homeassistant.yourdomain.com this week.

It knows which services you’re using (NPM uses /etc/letsencrypt/live/ or /Data/letsencrypt/), finds the certs, and reads their expiration dates. 30-day warning. 14-day urgent warning. 7-day escalation.

Backup Verification

Backups that aren’t verified are just rumors of backups. OpenClaw can:

  1. Check completion status — did the cron job actually run last night?
  2. Verify file existence — is the backup file where it should be?
  3. Check file age — is it recent, or has the backup been failing silently for a week?
  4. Spot-check restore — for critical services (Home Assistant config, Plex metadata), it can attempt a partial restore to a temp location and verify the files are valid

Automated Remediation

This is where it moves beyond monitoring into actual management. When something breaks, OpenClaw can diagnose and, within defined limits, fix it:

Container restart:

Diagnosis: Container was not responding on port 81 for 3 consecutive checks
Action: docker restart npm
Result: Container restarted successfully. HTTP probe now returning 200.
Log: Restart reason — exit code 137 (OOM kill). You may want to increase memory limit.

Cron job failure:

Diagnosis: No backup file found at /Data/backups/docker-volumes-latest.tar.gz
Action: Attempting manual backup...
Error: docker-compose command not found in PATH — likely a PATH issue in cron context
Recommendation: Check the cron environment or add full path to docker-compose binary

In the second case, it hit something it can’t fix automatically — but it diagnosed the problem and told you exactly what to check.

Disk Space Monitoring

Homelabs accumulate. Docker images, old backups, log files. OpenClaw tracks disk usage across your storage locations and alerts before you hit 90%:

This replaces the morning ritual of opening Portainer, then Home Assistant, then TrueNAS dashboard — just to confirm nothing’s on fire. OpenClaw has already checked all of it and tells you what’s actually wrong.

What You Need to Set This Up

  • OpenClaw running on a machine that has network access to your homelab (same LAN, or VPN)
  • Docker on the monitored host — docker ps and health checks require Docker access
  • A services config file — the YAML describing your infrastructure (one-time setup)
  • Optional: additional hosts — if monitoring multiple machines, OpenClaw needs SSH access or API tokens per host
  • Telegram or Discord channel for alerts and the morning report

Limitations

No hardware monitoring — if your CPU is throttling due to heat or your drives are showing SMART errors, OpenClaw can’t detect that without additional tooling (IPMI, SMARTmontools).

Permission boundaries — OpenClaw can restart Docker containers and run cleanup commands, but anything requiring root on the host needs appropriate sudoers configuration. Be thoughtful about what you let the agent run without prompting.

Network reachability — if the machine running OpenClaw can’t reach your homelab (VPN down, wrong subnet), monitoring gaps out silently. A secondary check from a different network location helps.

Not a replacement for proper monitoring — UptimeRobot or similar still makes sense for services you need to reach from outside your network. OpenClaw handles the ops layer (what’s wrong, what to fix); external monitoring handles the availability layer (is it reachable from the internet).

The Real Value

Most self-hosters have a mental model of their homelab that looks like: “it’s probably fine” between the moments when they check it manually. The anxiety of not knowing is constant. The 2am failure that you don’t notice until you’re trying to access something is common.
