How It Works

Adding a Connection

When you meet someone worth following up with, drop a quick note to OpenClaw:

OpenClaw saves this to a connections/ directory — structured files with the contact’s name, where you met, what you discussed, and any actionable leads. It becomes a searchable record you can query later.

The Quarterly Review

Once per quarter (or on whatever schedule you set), OpenClaw runs a network review:

  1. Flags stale connections — anyone you haven’t had any interaction with in 6+ months
  2. Pulls context — what you originally talked about, any relevant notes from your files
  3. Drafts re-engagement messages — personalized, referencing something specific, not generic
  4. Presents them to you — you review, edit, send, or skip

The message isn’t a form letter. Because OpenClaw has the original context from when you met, it references something specific: “Hey — we talked at the SaaS meetup about the Notion API webhooks. Hope that’s going well on your end.” The recipient gets a real message, not a connection-request-removal template.

Setup

The system lives in a directory you manage:

The context.md file tells OpenClaw who you are and what you’re optimizing for. If you’re job searching, it drafts messages oriented around that. If you’re in sales, it frames outreach around your product. It adapts.

The config.yaml controls behavior — how many months before a connection is considered “stale,” how many to surface per review, what channel to use for delivery.

This fires every quarter — January, April, July, October. You get a list of connections who’ve gone quiet, why you originally connected, and a draft message for each. You review it over coffee, send the ones worth sending, and done.

What You Need

  • OpenClaw with file read/write access
  • A connections directory — structured, searchable, owned by you
  • A context file — who you are, what you’re building, what your goals are
  • Optional: LinkedIn or email integration — OpenClaw can draft messages but needs a channel to send them. Email works natively; LinkedIn requires manual paste-and-send.

Limitations

  • OpenClaw doesn’t send LinkedIn messages directly — it drafts them, you send them. LinkedIn’s API doesn’t allow automated messaging from third-party agents.
  • Context depends on what you give it — the system only knows what you tell it. If you don’t add notes when you meet someone, the review won’t have much to work with.
  • Quarterly may still be too slow — if you’re actively job searching or selling, monthly makes more sense. The schedule is configurable.
  • Not a CRM — this is a lightweight system, not Salesforce. If you need pipeline management, deal tracking, and multi-touch campaigns, use a real CRM. This is for people who want to maintain relationships without managing a CRM.
