Never Lose Money to a Forgotten Free Trial Again
You signed up for a “free 30-day trial” three weeks ago. You meant to cancel it. You got busy. Now there’s a $149 charge on your credit card and you can’t remember what it was for.
This is one of the most common personal finance complaints, and it costs people hundreds of dollars a year. The fix isn’t discipline — discipline fails. The fix is a system that watches the trials you signed up for and gets in your face before they auto-convert.

OpenClaw logs it with today’s date, calculates the cancellation deadline, and stores it. Then it tells you:
“Got it. I’ll remind you in 12 days to cancel Notion before the trial ends. If you want to keep it, let me know and I’ll update the renewal date.”
That’s all. No app to open, no calendar entry to create manually.
The Renewal Reminder System
This is where it earns its keep. OpenClaw sends you a reminder before every trial converts and before every subscription renews. The timing is configurable, but the default is:
- Trials: 3 days before conversion — enough time to decide and cancel
- Subscriptions: 5 days before renewal — enough time to evaluate whether you still want it
- Price increases: immediately — when OpenClaw spots a charge higher than expected
The reminder isn’t just “this is happening.” It’s actionable:
”📋 Notion trial ends in 3 days. Current plan: $12/month. Cancel link: notion.so/cancel. Want me to cancel it for you? Just say the word.”
And if you say yes, OpenClaw can navigate to the cancellation page, guide you through the process, or at minimum pull up the link so you’re not searching for it at 11pm.
The Subscription Registry
Over time, OpenClaw builds a registry of everything you’re subscribed to:

The registry is built from what you tell OpenClaw, what it reads from your transaction data, and what it infers from charges over time. If a new subscription appears that you didn’t add, it flags it as a potential trial conversion.
Detecting Price Increases Automatically
This one surprised even me when I first set it up. OpenClaw reads your transaction CSV (the same file from the Financial Pulse use case) and compares each charge against the expected price for that subscription.
If a charge is higher than last month and higher than the baseline, it flags it:
“⚠️ Dropbox went from $11.99 to $13.99 — a 17% increase effective next billing cycle. Want me to find alternatives?”
This works for annual renewals too. “Your Adobe subscription renews in 45 days at $719.88 — that’s $60 more than last year. I can look for current pricing or alternatives.”
What You Need to Set It Up
- OpenClaw with Telegram (or WhatsApp/Discord)
- A subscriptions file — manually populated at first, then grown organically as you tell OpenClaw about new trials and subscriptions
- Optional: transaction CSV import — so OpenClaw can cross-check charges and auto-detect new subscriptions
- A weekly cron job — runs a scan to check upcoming renewals and flag anomalies

Limitations
Requires proactive entry — OpenClaw can’t magically discover a trial you signed up for without being told. The system only works if you actually report the trial when you sign up. Make it a habit: new trial = one message to OpenClaw.
Cancellation complexity — Some cancellations are straightforward; others require jumping through hoops. OpenClaw can help navigate the process, but can’t force-cancel on your behalf at every service. Some companies make it deliberately hard.
No automatic cancellation — for legal and safety reasons, OpenClaw doesn’t cancel things for you unless explicitly configured to do so with a specific, narrow permission set. This is intentional. You should be in the loop for any account changes.
Multi-person households — this works best for individuals. Shared subscriptions add ambiguity about who’s responsible for what.
Why This Works
The free trial problem isn’t a knowledge problem — everyone knows they should cancel trials they aren’t using. It’s an attention and timing problem. The trial ends in 30 days, you think you’ll decide later, and then it’s 30 days later.
OpenClaw shifts the decision point to when you signed up — “tell me if you want to keep this in 12 days” — rather than when the charge hits. It puts the reminder in your pocket before the deadline, not after the fact.
The subscription registry is the operational memory that individual humans don’t have. You can’t keep track of 15 subscriptions in your head, but you can have OpenClaw keep the list and tell you when anything changes.
