You bought a laptop for $1,400. Eighteen months later the battery starts dying. You vaguely remember the warranty was “around a year” but you never registered the product, never wrote down the date, and can’t find the receipt. You pay $200 to replace the battery out of pocket.

This happens constantly. Not because people are disorganized — because warranties are inherently forgettable. You buy something, it works fine, time passes, and then something breaks right after the warranty expires. You didn’t lose the claim. You lost it before it ever existed.

OpenClaw can be your warranty memory. It keeps track of what you bought, when you bought it, how long the warranty lasts, and whether you’ve registered. Then it gets in touch before coverage ends — so you can register if you haven’t, or file a claim while you still can.

The Problem With Warranties

Warranties have two failure modes. The first is the registration gap: many warranties are only valid if you register within 30–90 days of purchase. If you don’t, the manufacturer can deny a claim even if the product is clearly defective. Most people never register because they don’t know they need to, don’t have the receipt handy, or forget entirely.

The second failure mode is the expiration window: warranties are time-limited but the failure often isn’t. A product that works fine for 11 months and breaks at month 13 is outside warranty. But if you’d known the warranty was expiring in 60 days, you might have addressed the issue proactively — or at least found the receipt.

Both failure modes share the same root cause: no system for tracking warranty dates. OpenClaw provides that system.

How It Works

1. Adding Products

When you buy something meaningful, you send OpenClaw a quick message:

“Bought a Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, $349, 1-year warranty from today.”

Or for a bigger purchase where warranty length matters:

2. Registration Reminders

This is the high-value feature. If a product hasn’t been registered and the registration window is closing, OpenClaw notifies you:

“⚠️ KitchenAid mixer registration closes in 12 days. You bought it April 30 and the 30-day window ends May 30. Register at kitchenaid.com/register — you’ll need the model number (found on the bottom) and your receipt.”

Registration takes two minutes. You forget about it entirely unless something reminds you. Now something does.

3. Expiration Warnings

Before any warranty expires, OpenClaw sends a heads-up:

”🎧 Sony headphones warranty expires in 30 days (May 30). If you’re having any issues with them — battery, sound quality, anything — now’s the time to contact Sony before coverage ends. Your receipt is in Dropbox.”

This is useful even if nothing is currently wrong. If you’ve been experiencing intermittent issues — a click in your headphones, a slight whine in your mixer — you can get a claim in before the window closes. Manufacturers would rather fix small problems than replace expensive ones, and most will work with you if you’re within warranty.

4. The Claim Process

If something does fail within warranty, OpenClaw helps you execute the claim:

“My WH-1000XM5 headphones developed a rattle in the left driver at month 10. The warranty expires in 2 months. I need to contact Sony, reference my serial number [located on the left ear cup], and provide proof of purchase [Dropbox/sony-headphones-2026.pdf]. I want them repaired or replaced.”

OpenClaw drafts a claim message for you, pulls together the required documentation, and tracks the claim status until it’s resolved.

What OpenClaw Manages

Expiration tracking — the core function. OpenClaw knows when every warranty expires and sends reminders at configurable intervals (default: 60, 30, and 7 days before expiration).

Registration window alerts — catches the registration gap before it bites you. Most people don’t know they need to register within 30 days. OpenClaw tells you.

Receipt and documentation storage — you tell OpenClaw where the receipt lives (Dropbox, Google Drive, a local folder), and it knows where to find it when you need it for a claim. No more digging through email from three years ago.

Claim tracking — when you file, OpenClaw logs the claim number, expected response date, and any follow-up actions.

Value assessment — if OpenClaw flags a product as high-value (over a threshold you set, e.g., $200), it prioritizes reminders and suggests you register immediately after purchase.

Setup Requirements

  • OpenClaw with a messaging channel (Telegram, WhatsApp, or Discord)
  • A warranties file — built over time as you add purchases; starting with big-ticket items first is the right approach
  • Receipt storage — OpenClaw just needs to know where the receipts live, not hold them directly
  • Optional: purchase threshold — set a dollar amount (e.g., $100) above which OpenClaw automatically prompts you to log the warranty after you mention the purchase

Limitations

Depends on being told — OpenClaw can’t scan your credit card and auto-detect purchases. You have to add products when you buy them. The system works best if you make it a habit: big purchase → tell OpenClaw.

Doesn’t prevent failures — it reminds you before warranties expire, but can’t stop your appliances from breaking. The value is in capturing claims that would otherwise be missed.

Registration requirements vary — some warranties are automatic; others require a specific form, serial number, or proof of purchase. OpenClaw can remind you to register but can’t complete the registration for you (typically requires manufacturer website interaction).

No automatic claim filing — OpenClaw can draft messages and compile documentation, but submitting the claim is still your action. It removes the friction, not the action itself.

Serial numbers — you need to know and record serial numbers for some claims. OpenClaw can store them if you provide them, but doesn’t read them off the product automatically.

Why This Works

Warranty claims are a hidden source of unnecessary spending. Not because people don’t want to claim — because they don’t have a system that tells them when to claim. The warranty expired, or was never registered, or the receipt is gone. These are all preventable problems.

OpenClaw provides the memory that individual humans can’t maintain across dozens of products over years. Add purchases as they happen. Get reminders when it matters. File claims while you still have the right to.
