Automated Home Energy Optimization
Time-of-use electricity pricing is real, and for many households it’s the difference between paying $0.18/kWh and $0.55/kWh depending on when you run things. Peak hours — typically 4pm to 9pm on hot summer days — can cost three times what off-peak hours do. Most people never think about this because their appliances don’t know either.
OpenClaw can. It knows when electricity is cheap and when it’s expensive. It knows when a demand response event is coming. And it can coordinate your home’s high-energy activities to happen when it makes financial sense — not when the default timer says to.
The Problem with Default Schedules
Your dishwasher has an auto-delay feature. Your EV charger has an app. Your water heater maybe has a clock setting. But none of these know what your utility charges right now. They run on timers you set once and forget, regardless of whether it’s the most expensive hour of the day.
Meanwhile, your utility is publishing pricing signals you never see:
- Time-of-use tiers — on-peak (2pm–8pm), off-peak (11pm–7am), super off-peak (something like 3am–6am)
- Demand response events — occasional requests to reduce usage during grid stress, often 2-4 hours’ notice
- Seasonal changes — summer peak pricing differs from winter
If you’re not accounting for these, you’re probably paying 20–40% more than you need to on your electricity bill.
How OpenClaw Handles It
Step 1: Capture Your Utility’s Rate Structure
OpenClaw needs to know your pricing. You give it the basics once:
Electricity rate structure:
- On-peak: $0.42/kWh (4pm–9pm, weekdays May–Sept)
- Off-peak: $0.18/kWh (9pm–4pm weekdays, all weekend)
- Super off-peak: $0.09/kWh (11pm–7am daily)
- Demand response events: notified via email/SMS from utility
My high-energy appliances:
- EV charger: ChargePoint Home Flex (connected app)
- Dishwasher: Bosch 800 series (delay start available)
- Clothes dryer: LG (delay start available)
- Water heater: Rheem (smart thermostat)
- Pool pump: Pentair (timer-based)
This lives in a utility file that OpenClaw owns and updates when rates change.
Step 2: Know When Devices Can Run
Not everything can be shifted. OpenClaw categorizes:
Flexible (can shift by hours):
- EV charging — typically needs to be done by morning, but any window of 8pm–7am works
- Dishwasher — can run at any time, just needs to be loaded
- Pool pump — 6-8 hour runtime, can shift to midnight
Semi-flexible (shift within a window):
- Dryer — can run any time but someone needs to be home to move clothes
- Water heater — stays within range but shifts to cheap hours for reheat
Inflexible:
- Cooking, lighting, entertainment — these don’t have scheduling options
The point isn’t to shift everything. It’s to capture the low-hanging fruit — devices that run for hours and don’t need human attention.
Step 3: Dynamic Scheduling
OpenClaw builds a daily schedule based on current pricing:
EV Charging
- Default: start at 11pm (super off-peak), done by 6am
- If demand response event detected (4pm–8pm): shift to 11pm–4am instead
- Override: if you need a full charge by 6am, set "EV priority mode" and it starts at 9pm
Dishwasher
- Default: delay start until 10pm (off-peak)
- If loaded before 10pm and not started: runs at 10pm
- If demand response event: holds until 11pm or confirms next off-peak window
Pool Pump
- Runs 1am–7am (6 hours, super off-peak window)
- If event: skips day and runs next night instead
The schedule isn’t static — it adjusts to actual conditions. If a demand response event comes in at 3pm, OpenClaw reprioritizes and shifts loads accordingly.
Step 4: Demand Response Handling
When your utility sends a demand response alert (usually 2–4 hours’ notice), OpenClaw:
- Confirms receipt and assesses impact
- Identifies what can be shifted (EV charging, pool pump, pre-cooled water heater)
- Adjusts schedules to avoid peak window
- Sends you a summary: “DR event 4pm–8pm: EV charging moved to 11pm, pool pump skipped tonight, dishwasher held until 9pm. Estimated savings: $4.20 vs running everything on-peak.”
This turns a demand response event — which typically comes with bill credits of $1–3/kWh reduced — from “I got an email I’ll ignore” to “automatically handled, credited to my account.”
Step 5: Monthly Reporting
A monthly summary:

Real Example
June 15th — a heat wave is hitting. Your utility sends a demand response alert for 4pm–8pm: “Reduce usage, get $2.50/kWh credit.” You have 40kWh of EV charging queued (from needing a full charge for tomorrow’s commute). On a normal day, you’d start charging at 9pm when you get home.
OpenClaw sees the DR event and your flexible loads. It:
- Starts the EV charge at 11pm instead of 9pm (after the event ends, but still in off-peak)
- Confirms dishwasher is scheduled for after 10pm
- Skips the pool pump run that was scheduled for 2am (too close to peak, not worth the wear)
- Sends you a summary: “DR event handled. EV charging shifted 2 hours. Pool pump delayed. $6.50 in bill credits earned.”
Without OpenClaw, you’d come home, plug in the EV, and run through the entire event on peak pricing — paying extra on your normal usage, missing the credit.
What You Need to Set It Up
- OpenClaw with file system access and email monitoring (for utility alerts)
- Smart appliances or plugs — at minimum, a smart EV charger and smart plug for high-energy devices; most modern appliances have delay-start or smart plugs
- Utility rate info — your utility’s current TOU structure (usually on their website)
- Device capability mapping — what each device can do and when it’s acceptable to run
- Integration options (optional): ChargePoint API, EcoSmart plugs, Rheem water heater API — OpenClaw can interface with these if credentials are provided
Why OpenClaw Works Well Here
This is a scheduling and optimization problem — exactly what OpenClaw is good at. It needs to track time, respond to events, adjust schedules, and report results. None of that requires a specialized smart home hub — just the ability to know what time it is, what prices are in effect, and what your devices can do.
The multi-device coordination is where OpenClaw adds value. A smart plug can turn something on or off. OpenClaw can decide which off-peak window to use based on tomorrow’s schedule, a demand response event, and your device priorities. It’s orchestration, not just automation.
Limitations
This requires smart appliances or plugs — you can’t optimize what you can’t control. A vintage dryer without delay start isn’t going to shift. The optimization ceiling is set by your hardware.
The accuracy of demand response predictions varies by utility. Some send automated alerts with advance notice; others are less reliable. OpenClaw handles what it receives, but can’t manufacture a signal that isn’t there.
Time-of-use pricing also isn’t universal — some regions have flat rates. This use case only applies if your utility actually varies pricing by time.
Finally, this is financial optimization, not load management for off-grid or battery backup scenarios. If you’re running solar + battery, different rules apply. OpenClaw can still help, but the optimization logic shifts.
For anyone on a time-of-use rate plan, though, this is one of the highest-ROI automations you can build. The hardware pays for itself in the first summer.
