Homelab Cost and Uptime Monitor
You run services at home. Jellyfin, Home Assistant, Vaultwarden, your Docker stack. The electricity bill comes and it’s higher than you expected. You have no idea which machine is eating the most power. A drive fails in your NAS and you don’t notice until you’re trying to access something. Your media server went down for three hours and you only found out because your partner asked why Plex wasn’t working.
OpenClaw can be your homelab’s command center — tracking power consumption, monitoring uptime, alerting on failures, and surfacing the cost data you need to make decisions about what to keep running and when.
The Problem
Homelabs are great until they’re not. The silent problems:
- Unknown power draw — you have no idea if that old i7 server is costing you $40/month in electricity or $120. You just see the bill.
- Invisible failures — a drive in a RAID array goes bad, a container keeps restarting, a service stops responding. You find out when something breaks or someone asks why it’s not working.
- No cost context — is running your entire homelab 24/7 actually worth it for the services you use? Nobody knows.
- No lifecycle planning — hardware fails. When it does, it’s usually inconvenient and expensive. Knowing how old your hardware is and what replacement costs helps you plan ahead.

Real power draw varies, but this gives you a baseline. When your bill arrives, you can adjust the estimate.
Uptime Monitoring
Set up a simple health check cron that pings your services:

Every 15 minutes, OpenClaw checks. If something is down, you get an alert immediately — not three hours later when someone notices.

Hardware Lifecycle Planning
When hardware crosses an age threshold, OpenClaw flags it:
“HP Microserver Gen8 is 4 years old. Average homelab server lifespan: 5-7 years. Start planning for replacement. Estimated replacement cost: $600. Consider beginning to research options in the next 3 months.”
This turns reactive hardware failures into planned replacements. You have time to research, budget, and order hardware on your timeline — not during an emergency.
Drive Health Tracking
For NAS systems, track drive health:

OpenClaw tracks hours and flags drives with high hours or recent replacements. When a drive starts showing warnings, you get an alert before it fails.
What You Need to Set It Up
- OpenClaw with file read/write, cron, and Telegram delivery
- A hardware inventory file (

- A health check cron — every 15 minutes for critical services, or every hour for less critical ones

Limitations
- Power estimates are approximate — without IPMI or smart PDU data, OpenClaw uses nameplate power draw estimates. Real-world consumption varies. Calibrate against your actual bill.
- Uptime checks are network-local — if OpenClaw and your homelab are on the same network, checks work. Remote monitoring requires VPN or a relay.
- Docker/container monitoring — this assumes Docker is running and OpenClaw can access the Docker socket. If OpenClaw runs in a container itself, you may need to mount the Docker socket or use a different monitoring approach.
- No automatic hardware discovery — you enter your hardware manually. OpenClaw doesn’t scan your network and find everything automatically.
